Writing for Social ChanGe

Joint Class Photos

THE COURSE

Writing for Social Change is an advanced writing course for Roger Williams University students. Students in the course partner with a local, non-profit social service agency and work to meet the agency's goals through various research and writing projects.

Most recently in Spring 2019, Writing for Social Change has partnered with the Transition Academy at RWU to work with students and staff to accomplish common goals.

THE PARTNERSHIP

Students in Writing for Social Change work closely with Transition Academy staff to produce "deliverables," or concrete documents that the staff can use to enhance the program. The programs also hold joint classes several times per month, during which RWU students and Transition Academy students meet and collaborate with their peers on various projects and activities.

THE PROJECTS

RWU students assist the Transition Academy with projects such as:

  • Newsletters

  • Brochures

  • Calendars

  • Student yearbooks

  • Grant writing

  • Community mapping

  • Social media (and this website!)

Transition Academy students work with their new friends at RWU to create:

  • Resumes

  • Presentations

  • Individual profiles
