OVERVIEW

The Transition Academy is located on the campus of Roger Williams University where students prepare for the world of work and access the college community. The Transition Academy is designed for students with disabilities 18 to 21 who:

  • Have an IEP, are currently enrolled in high school and are near completion of their academic program

  • Are eligible for Office of Rehabilitation Services

  • Need a community-based functional skills/vocational curriculum

  • Can achieve independence (with initial support)

  • Can become semi-independent on a college campus

RITA@RWU is a unique program that provides students an opportunity to complete their education on a university campus.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Students will...

  • Participate in three 8-10 week internships, matched to their personal skills, abilities, and preferences

  • Receive special education classroom instruction three mornings per week

  • Learn how to take public transportation to and from campus

  • Participate in social events with their peers one day per week

REAL LIFE SKILLS

Students have an opportunity to learn independent living skills in both the classroom and the community.

Independent living skills are essential for taking steps towards employment and independent living.

OBJECTIVES

1. To learn about themselves and the world around them.

2. To learn in many settings, such as the classroom, community, and internships.

3. To participate in campus activities and join clubs.

4. To make friends and engage in social activities.

5. To learn how to access their community.

6. To receive the same experience as their non-disabled peers.
